August is Summer Fun Safety Month

Summer is in full swing and, if you’re like other Advanced Feet and Ankle Care patients, you’re having a great time. Unfortunately, all that fun can be hard on feet and ankles. Injury and infections abound. Are you doing all you can to stay safe and healthy during August? It’s Summer Fun Safety Month! Here are five tips from Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene to keep you feeling great.

  1. Use sunscreen. We know you’ve heard it before, but its bears repeating. There’s nothing different about the skin on feet and ankles! This part of your body is as vulnerable to skin cancer as anywhere else.

  2. Stay safe from foot and ankle injuries. Make sure your footwear is in good condition. Just like on your tires, treads should be deep enough to offer good traction. Cushioning and support should make feet feel comfortable. If you’re experiencing discomfort, particularly if you notice the morning heel pain that is characteristic of plantar fasciitis, you should see your podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis, and treatment as soon as possible.

  3. Are you someone who enjoys showing off their pretty toes in a pair of summer sandals? If you’re headed to the salon for a pedicure, be sure to take steps to avoid toenail fungus, athlete's foot, and other infections. Choose an establishment known for excellent hygiene practices. Bring your own tools. Make sure that soaking basins are lined with disposable liners and that they are replaced after every client. Never let the tech use a razor or grater on your feet. These can cause small nicks and cuts that allow pathogens to enter the body.

  4. Eat for good health. Headed to a summer barbecue? Skip the cheeseburgers and macaroni salad. Focus on lean protein sources like chicken and fish, delicious summer produce, and plenty of water.

  5. Headed out for a walk or a game of tennis? Save your outdoor exercise for the cooler times of day. Take a break if you need one. Be sure to wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and to stay well-hydrated.
