Everything You Need To Know About Gout

When it comes to the upcoming holiday season, gout plays an important role. Don’t know what exactly gout is? It’s a painful form of arthritis affecting over 3 million Americans and their feet every year. Gout can show up on any joint, but the big toe is usually the target spot. Since gout has to do with what we eat, there’s no better time to talk about gout than before the holiday feasts begin! Here’s everything you need to know about gout.

Causes

Gout happens when your body has too much uric acid, which is both a naturally occurring chemical and comes from some of the foods we eat. When we have high levels of uric acid, it can crystallize in our joints, bloodstream, and tissues. These crystals are sharp, which can create a lot of problems for our joints. Foods high in purines are usually the culprit behind gout and hyperuricemia. These include:

  • Red meat

  • Organ meats

  • Food and beverages high in fructose

  • Shellfish

  • Beer

  • Red wine

  • Brandy

Almost anyone can get gout if they aren’t careful. But some people are at a higher risk. If you’re male, obese, have a chronic condition like diabetes, take specific medications, or have a family history of gout, you’re more likely to develop it.

Symptoms

How do you know you have gout? Gout goes through periods of attacks and remission. Attacks usually occur at night and come on suddenly, creating a lot of pain and discomfort. You’ll feel pain more severely within the first 12 hours, but it can linger for days or weeks. Here are some other signs you have gout in your joints:

  • Inflammation

  • Redness

  • Limited range of motion
