Five Foot Care Tips for Men

June is Men's Health Month. Hopefully, you're taking advantage of the reminder to take good care of yourself. See your doctor for a physical exam to look for chronic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. Head into the clinic and get any vaccines on schedule. Remember your feet, ankles, and lower legs, too! Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene have some tips specific to men but read on, ladies, because these are good for you.

1.    Make sure your shoes fit correctly. Poorly-fitting footwear is responsible for a wide range of foot and ankle issues, including painful bunions and hammertoes. If it’s been over a year, head to your favorite shoe store and ask for a fitting before your next purchase.

2.    Keep your feet clean. Wash daily with water and plenty of antibacterial soap. Dry well, focusing especially on the spaces between the toes. These simple steps will help keep you safe from athlete's foot and other fungal infections. It will also help prevent unpleasant foot odor.

3.    Don’t go barefoot in public spaces. It's easy to pick up germs that cause plantar warts and toenail fungus in locker rooms, pool decks, and even hotel rooms. Always create a barrier between your skin and places where others walk by wearing a pair of shower sandals or slippers.

4.    Ingrown toenails are among the most common reasons for urgent visits to our office. Keep toenails well-trimmed. Be sure to use a clipper rather than scissors and to trim straight across. Don’t round the corners as you might do on fingernails. Use an emery board to smooth any rough edges.

5.    See your podiatrist any time your feet hurt. Foot pain is an indicator of a problem, and your expert foot doctor is the best person to determine what it is. Foot and ankle injuries and chronic conditions such as plantar fasciitis are common.  Many non-invasive treatment options, including custom orthotics for cushioning and support, are available.
